-Region I athletes are optimistic that the delegation will secure an improved
position in the overall standing for this year’s Palarong Pambansa from their
12th rank in last year’s national games in Dapitan, City Zamboanga.
The Region 1 delegation which is composed of 395 athletes are
targeting for their best performance and eyeing to capture better placements in
various sporting events of Palaro 2012.
As a fresh start, Region I athlete Danilo Abarra dominated in
the Javelin Throw finishing with 51.51 meter-distance throw bagging the
championship slot in the secondary division boys. Angelica Janda placed 2nd
in high jump (secondary girls) posting 1.53 meter distance height while Remmier
Sugui placed 2nd with 9.76 meter distance in the Shot Put
(elementary). Other athletes who placed have marked good standings in athletics
include Sairah Jhan De Vera, 3rd-High Jump (elementary-girls), Alvin
Caasi, 3rd-High Jump (secondary-boys), Neilliam Nerona, 5th-100
meter-run (elementary boys) and Larry Bernardino, 6th - 800m –run
(elementary boys).
In the Triple Jump Elementary Division (boys), Roderick
Abarra and Jay Mark Gascon ranked 3rd and 6th after
soaring 11.70 and 10.89 high respectively. Gascon who also competed in the Long
Jump Elementary division leaped 5.29 meters earning him 5th spot
while Criselda Fernandez ranked 6th
in the Triple Jump Secondary Division (Girls) with her 10.60 meter high
leap.
For Shot Put Elementary Division (girls), Lorie Mel Pico
marked a distance of 8.77 meters which earned her 4th spot.
Meanwhile, male gymnasts of Region 1 delegation contributed
six good placements in Gymnastics. In artistic Gymnastics the delegation placed
2nd in the overall standings with 70.350 points while Individual All
Around contender Mico Casabueno took 6th spot with 23.85 points.
Gymnasts
of the Secondary Division occupied the 4th spot in the team standing
with 69.750 points along with Alludin Panara-ag who was declared 5th
in the Individual All Around with 25.050 points. For girls division, female
gymnasts ranked 4th in Rhythmic Gymnastics with 81.408 points while
Aivian Nicole Castro placed 7th with 29.073.
For archery which was contested last May 5 at the Capitol
Resort Hotel here, Mary Queen Ybanez placed 5th in the 40 meter
event with 296 points.
In swimming,
athletes streaked good ranks in three events. Gwyneth Amber Cawaling bagged 4th
place in 200m Freestyle Elementary-Girls along with Thea Isabelle Langit who
positioned 4th in 100m Backstroke Elementary-Girls. The team
finished 5th in the 200m Medley Relay (elementary).
Palaro
2012 will run until May 12 at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center (NRSCC)
here and in some other venues in Binmaley, Dagupan and San Carlos City.
