Lingayen --- “Advocacy without practice is wanting. Even if we lecture so much about traditions in the classroom, but if we do not practice them, they become useless.”

This was the striking remark of Governor Amado T. Espino’s speech, which was delivered by Chief Administrative Officer Irmina Francisco, during the opening of the first Regional Folkdance seminar-workshop conducted by the Philippine Folk Dance Society (PFDS) Region 1 Chapter at the Narciso Gym on September 13, here.

The statement, which stirred the participants’ attention, was impetus to the provincial government’s thrust on the province’s cultural rebirth through the reawakening the cultural sensitivities of Pangasineses, especially the youth.

“It is not only the provincial government’s responsibility to come up with such programs for cultural revival, promotion and preservation -- it is everybody’s business,” the Governor added.

The Governor had been saying that all programs of the provincial government anchored on cultural preservation are not only meant for the present generation, but more so, for the future generation.

In 2010, the Danggoan Pangasinan cultural group was formed. A year after, the “I Love Pangasinan” movement and “Balitok a Tawir,” official Pangasinan Culture and Arts Festival of the province, were launched.

“The activity bears an impact to the thrust of the provincial government on cultural preservation, especially that we are dealing with folk dances,” PFDS – Region 1 chapter President Childe Libertad said.

According to Libertad, “The seminar-workshop was timely and beneficial to local government units in the province -- as participants to the Balitok A Tawir folk dance competition in October.”

Some key officials of the PFDS were invited as resource speakers who will teach the skills, proper execution and interpretation of literature of these folk dances: Pukol, Binislakan, Jota Pangasinana, Balambang, Magkatipan and Tiklos.

The final day of the workshop will highlight the presentation of the folk and street dances by the participants.

About 100 participants from Pangasinan are teachers and student representatives of DepEd schools divisions, public and private tertiary schools, Danggoan cultural group of the provincial government, local government units and others from Ilocos Sur, La Union and Ilocos Norte provinces. Aside from certificates of participation and souvenir items, the participants will each receive a CD of the folkdances, including the folkdance literatures that were taught in the three-day affair.
