LINGAYEN, PANGASINAN --- Most people simply curse the darkness but the youth of Pangasinan opted instead to light candles.

From a single candle lighted by Governor Amado T. Espino in the darkened Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center (NRSCC) here, each of the provincial scholars lighted their own. In a few minutes, over a thousand candles were aglow, conquering the darkness.

The candles started swaying in cadence with the rhythm of Michael Jackson’s hit song, Heal the World that evoked a sense of hope among the participants.

Full lighting was restored and a young announcer led the group in reciting a statement of commitment of Pangasinan’s youth to get involved in promoting programs that redound to the betterment of the province and joining the fight against serious threats to society, particularly illegal drugs.

The 1,200 provincial scholars from nine campuses of the Pangasinan State University then attached their signatures on a life-size board on which their statement of commitment was printed, sealing their active participation.

The candle-lighting and signing ritual served as the fitting climax of the formal launching of the “Kabataan ng Pangasinan Kapit-Bisig Laban sa Droga at Para sa Kalikasan held Friday evening (July 26) at the NRSCC.
Earlier during the launching, a resource person from the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) briefed the state scholars on the many ill-effects of using dangerous drugs which at times resulted in the commission of crimes and, among users, in suicide.

It was pointed out further that involvement in the war against the menace requires the involvement of all segments of society, but more particularly the youth who have been known to be most vulnerable to experiment in taking in banned drugs.

Governor Espino, on the other hand, expressed his confidence in the provincial government’s scholars to lead other young people in the province in the concerted campaign to make Pangasinan drug-free.

“The anti-drug campaign is a serious matter and should not be taken lightly,” said the governor who was the principal author of the Dangerous Drugs Act when he was a member of the House of Representatives.
The governor only a week ago, came to an agreement with the PDEA to a partnership in the government’s total war against the social menace in the province.

The candle-lighting and commitment ceremony, will be replicated first in the nine campuses of PSU to enlist the involvement of more students in the movement.

This will later cascade down to national high schools in the 44 towns and four cities of the province and later on campuses of private colleges and universities. As a parallel advocacy, the state scholars also got briefed on the necessity to save the environment during the launching forum and got involved in seaside clean-up, tree planting and the dispersal of tilapia fingerlings the following day.
