LINGAYEN— Governor Amado T. Espino Jr. exhorted hundreds of scholars from the nine campuses of the Pangasinan State University (PSU) to actively participate in the government’s anti-illegal drugs campaign during the highly spirited candle lighting ceremonies at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic center (NRSCC) last Friday evening.

In urging the provincial government’s college scholars, the governor stressed that for the anti-drugs campaign to succeed, the youth must be made to internalize themselves with the ill-effects of the menace through a doctrinal movement, dubbed as “Kabataan ng Pangasinan, Kapit-bisig Laban sa Droga at para sa Kalikasan.

“We wish for the commitment of each one of you for this endeavor and I know that you will never fail us for the good of everybody: for yourself, for your family, for your friends, for your community, for your province, and for your country,” Espino told the students.

The PSU scholars signed a manifesto of commitment to showcase their involvement in the campaign.

“We shall always renew our commitment to uphold the vision of Pangasinan as the best place to invest, work, live, and raise a family and the mission to make Pangasinan No. 1,” thus states the covenant.

“We have been doing our work on anti-drugs silently,” said Espino in an interview with the media during the event, as he assured that he is now in close coordination with the Philippine Drugs Enforcement Agency (PDEA) to intensify the campaign through prevention of the use of the illegal substance and the apprehension as well as prosecution of persons behind the illegal drug trade.

“The anti-drug campaign is a serious matter and should not be taken lightly,” said the governor who was the principal author of the Dangerous Drugs Act when he was a member of the House of Representatives.

“Guided by law, we will make Pangasinan a drug-free province,” the governor declared..

In the same candle-lighting ceremony, Bugallon Mayor Jumel Espino declared his “total commitment” to the campaign and called upon the studentry to be “addicted not to illegal drugs but to studying” and in other ways helpful to one’s family and the school.

Vice Governor Jose Ferdinand Z. Calimlim, Jr. for his part, remarked, “Itong gabing ito ay isang gabi ng pasasalamat, isang gabi para sa lahat ng kabataan para inyong malaman ang power of the youth: the power to say ‘yes’ when it is good, to say ‘no’ when it is bad…”

Espino said the PSU scholars are also being harnessed in the provincial government’s environment protection and prevention program, particularly in river cleanups, tree-planting, fingerlings dispersal and seedlings distribution, among others.

With the participation of the youth, the Governor said he and son, Jumel, are undertaking a tourism-related project to develop a long stretch of the Agno riverbank in Barangay Banaga, Bugallon as a center of water sports activities.

Meanwhile, Espino commended the PSU Urdaneta City for posting a 100% passing rate in board examination for Mechanical Engineering.

The provincial government provides financial assistance to over 1,200 students in the nine PSU campuses namely Lingayen, Infanta, Alaminos City, Binmaley, Bayambang, Asingan, Urdaneta City, Sta. Maria, and San Carlos City. The following day, Governor Espino led the PSU scholar in the coastal clean-up at the Lingayen Beachfront, the tree planting of 800 acacia mangium at Domalandan elementary school and dispersal of 10,000 tilapia fingerlings along the Agno River in Banaga, Bugallon.
