Lingayen --- The provincial government of Pangasinan will soon enter into a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) led by Regional Director Nestor Domenden for the implementation of the Ecosystems Improved for Sustainable Fisheries (ECOFISH) project which was launched last January covering the Lingayen Gulf Marine Key Diversity Area (MKBA).
The move was approved on September 9 by the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) in provincial resolution 93-2013 which authorized Governor Amado T. Espino Jr. to sign the MOA with the agency’s regional office headed by Director Nestor Domenden..
Vice Governor Jose Ferdinand Z. Calimlim Jr, said however, that “amendments which include the inclusion of all coastal municipalities and cities in the province and the project’s budgetary scrutiny before the SP will be executed.”
Initially, only Alaminos is included in the ECOFISH project as marine key diversity area along with San Fernando City and six more municipalities in La Union province.
The provincial government, on its part, will assist and support on the formulation, adoption and implementation of fisheries management plans and projects in 14 coastal municipalities of Pangasinan, namely: Infanta, Dasol, Burgos, Agno, Bani, Bolinao, Anda, Sual, Labrador, Lingayen, Binmaley, San Fabian, and the cities of Alaminos and Dagupan.
Counterpart financial support to coastal LGUs in Pangasinan for fisheries management programs will also be provided by the provincial government based on the MOA.
The ECOFISH project, as support advocacy of the provincial government’s Coastal Resource Management (CRM) program, is expected to further develop and promote the sustainability of the fishery sector in the province through conservation of biological diversity, enhancement of ecosystem productivity and restoration of profitability of fishery areas.
Under the leadership of Gov. Espino, the province is a regional Hall of Fame awardee for Coastal Resource Management. The ECOFISH is a five-year-old project of the Department of Agriculture – BFAR funded by the United States Assistance for International Development (USAID).
