Lingayen --The Provincial Health Office has urged Local Government Units (LGUs) in the province to conduct more blood-letting activities in preparation for the dengue season as well as in reducing maternal deaths.

The move is urgent and necessary, Provincial Health Officer Anna Maria Teresa de Guzman said, to ensure safe and readily available blood supply for consumption of dengue patients and for women with post-partum hemorrhage -- part of attaining Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 5: Reducing Maternal Mortality.

“Bago pa dumatingangpanahonng tag-ulan at angmgapangangailangansadugo, dapatmaging proactive natayo,” the Provincial Health Officer said.

Chief town and city executives and their health officers are then advised to conduct blood-letting activities in partnership with duly authorized hospitals and medical institutions.

The provincial government, for its part, conducts annual blood-letting activity dubbed “Dugo Mo, DugtongngBuhayKo” every June 20 in observance of the World Donors’ Month and Dengue Awareness Month and as part of the birthday celebration of Governor Amado T. Espino, Jr.

At least 55 blood bags or 24,750cc of blood was collected in the recently held mobile blood donation at Eastern Pangasinan District Hospital (EPDH) in Tayug. The activity was held in partnership with Region 1 Medical Center (R1MC) and LGUs in the sixth district of Pangasinan.

“Hopefully, magtuloy-tuloyang partnership between the provincial government and LGUs, and R1MC saganitong activityparamarami pa angmatulungannatinnamganangangailanganngdugo,” R1MC nurse Dahlia Amor de Vera said.

De Vera said the increasing demand for blood transfusion necessitates the conduct of more blood-letting activities.

Blood bags collected, after thorough tests, will be made readily available in the blood bank of R1MC for patients, mostly those indigent Pangasinenses who are in dire need of blood transfusion due to dengue and complicated birth deliveries, and they are currently admitted in provincial government-owned and managed hospitals.

In related news, a total of 140 in-patients admitted in the EPDH as well as their family members, were given food packs as treat of Governor Espinoin his 66th birthday celebration.

Meanwhile, Gov. Espinocelebrated his birthday with the 416 in-patients of the Pangasinan Provincial Hospital (PPH) in San Carlos City on that day.All patients of the 14 hospitals that are owned and managed by the provincial government also received food packs.
