LINGAYEN---The Department of Social Welfare and Development turned-over a total of P62.9millionto all local government units ofPangasinanas fund allocation for the supplementary feeding program (SFP) for day care children in the province.

The turn-over ceremony was held at the Pangasinan Training and Development Center here last June 26 where the four cities and 44 municipalities received their share of fund allocation to be used for the provision of food in addition to the regular meals to currently enrolled day care children as part of the DSWD’s contribution to the Early Childhood Care and Development program of the government.

Provincial Social Welfare and Development Officer Emil Samson who represented Gov. Amado T. Espino, Jr. thanked the DSWD for giving the province and the local government units the opportunity to feed the more than 40, 000 children enrolled in the various day care centers in Pangasinan .

Alma C. Gonzales, DSWD program focal person and Helen Nerona, division chief of Institutional Development Institution said they are very happy that Pangasinan has the biggest number of participants with local executives and social welfare development officers compared to the other provinces in the region.

As this developed, Iryn Cubangbang, regional information officer said the SFP implementation is in partnership with the local government units and the Day Care Service Parents Group, the lead implementer.
Now on its 3rd year, the program started in 2011 which covers the cities and municipalities of Pangasinan with 1, 362 day care centers and 40,439 target children beneficiaries.

Beneficiaries are 3-4 year old children enrolled in the day care centers and 5-year old children not catered in the Department of Education.

Cubangbang said the program aims to provide augmentation support to the feeding program for children in the LGU-Day Care Centers, improve knowledge, attitude and practices of children and parents on nutrition and health education, and improve and sustain nutritional status of the day care children.

The feeding will be in the form of “hot meals” (rice and viand) to be served during break time in the morning or afternoon to children in day care centers five days a week for 120 days or six months.

Cubangbang said the parents through the Day Care Centers Parents Group will manage the feeding program based on the prepared cycle menu using available indigenous food materials.

Moreover, parents will be required to attend Parent Effectiveness and Home Care Session twice a week where the sessions will revolve on self, family and parenting, health and nutrition, love of country and home and environment which will be implemented or facilitated by the local social welfare and development officers.

The amount of checks ranged from P300, 000 to P3-million with Mangatarem as the municipality with the biggest fund allocation of P3.2-million and Sto. Tomas town with the smallest allocation of P390, 000. Cubangbang said the fund allocations were computed based on the number of beneficiaries.
